Original sin is the Christian doctrine that humans inherit a tainted nature and a propensity for sin by birth.[1] Theologians have characterized this condition in many ways, viewing it as ranging from something as insignificant as a slight deficiency, or a tendency toward sin yet without collective guilt, called "sin nature," to total depravity or guilt. automatic of all humans by collective guilt [2].

The doctrine of original sin has little basis in the Bible. It began to emerge in the 3rd century, but did not take its final form until the writings of Augustine of Hippo (354-430), who was the first author to use the expression "original sin" (Latin : original peccatum)[3][4]. Augustine's view of original sin was based on a mistranslated passage from the Apostle Paul's Epistle to the Romans, and scholars have debated whether this passage supported Augustine's view.[5 ][6].

Augustine's formulation of original sin became popular among Protestant reformers, such as Martin Luther and John Calvin, who equated original sin with concupiscence (or "hurtful desire"), claiming that it persisted even after baptism and completely destroyed the freedom to do good, and proposed that original sin involved a loss of free will, except for sin.[7] Modern Augustinian Calvinism holds this view. The Jansenist movement, which the Catholic Church declared heretical starting in 1653, also held that original sin destroyed freedom of will.[8] The Catholic Church states instead that "baptism, by conferring life with the grace of Christ, erases original sin and returns man to God, but the consequences for nature, weakened and prone to evil, persist in the man and call him to spiritual combat"[9].
